1.29 miles / 2.08 km A mixture of pavements and tracks At the gate to the Muthill Old Church & Tower, note the 11th Century bell tower and cemetery on Drummond Street. A board depicting its history is displayed on railings by the entrance, a look around the church and graveyard is recommended. Walking right along Drummond Street and crossing the road at the break between the houses takes you to the 'Backrow Public Well'. The spout in the well fed by a spring was once a source of water for the village. While at this spot, take another look at the Bell Tower's windows where you can imagine two monks having a conversation – just below the crow step gables of the roof are two carved faces. Drummond St. houses the 1746 sundial mounted on the wall of Cruachan on the north side of the street. This is where the estate workers gathered daily to walk to work, and be dismissed to visit the last house on the south side of the street – the Black Bull Inn – still known as such to this day. Leaving Coronation Park to your right – formerly a common grazing area – cross the road to the path at the bowling green and veering left continue through the stone pillars entry to Drummond Estate office Follow the path bordered by rhododendrons as directed. At Pitkellony Lodge House gates, cross the road to Highlandman Park – formerly a linen bleaching green – and follow the contours of the park down the hill to the war memorial. Veering right continue on the pavement alongside the park and on your left notice a house called Little Culdees – a battlemented gothic villa built in 1819, possibly named in honour of the community of monks responsible for Muthill buildings prior to 1070 Continue on past the iron gates with the bull's head to the dog's head well and hitching stones. This area is where historically the drovers from the Highlands brought the cattle to drink and rest before continuing south to market. Walk to the end of the village past the filling station across the road and follow the sign pointing to Old Station Road down the farm track. From here you can see the first of Muthill's three church towers outlined against the hills above Crieff, Blue Craigs and Stonefield Ridge Turn left along Old Station Road and towards the village, passing the Manse, the Millenium Garden (the original 1860 school house play area) and Muthill New Parish Church (1826). Turn left into narrow road at St James Episcopal Church (1836 gothic cruciform style) to the main road passing on the left a roundell, an original outside stairway to upper story dwellings. Looking across and up to the left is an archway dated 1795 – the period from 1770 is noted as one of prosperity, a labourer could earn as much as a shilling per day. Finally, turn right to return to your starting point.
